Minister's claims on avian flu for the birds, says US

THE United States has rejected the Indonesian Health Minister's
claims it is using bird flu samples to produce biological
weapons, and World Health Organisation officials have condemned
allegations of conspiring to profit from bird flu vaccines.

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is believed to
have ordered Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari to recall
copies of her book on avian influenza, It's Time for the World
to Change, which alleges the US and WHO are conspiring against
developing countries by seizing control of bird flu samples.

WHO officials said they were dismayed by some of the claims, and
urged Dr Supari to do more to control bird flu's spread and end
her refusal to share virus samples, which the WHO says is
hampering attempts to find a cure.

US State Department spokeswoman Susan Stahl denied Dr Supari's
claim that Indonesian virus samples had been sent to a
biological weapons laboratory in Los Alamos. The laboratory has
no bird flu viruses from Indonesia or elsewhere, she said.

The only involvement of the facility was hosting a database of
publicly available genetic sequencing data to help track the
evolution of the virus, she said.

Dr Supari yesterday continued to state that virus samples had
been sent via the WHO to a biological weapons laboratory in Los
Alamos.


"Whether they use it to make vaccine or develop chemical weapons
would depend on the need and interest of the US Government," she
said. "It is indeed a very dangerous situation for the destiny
of humanity." WHO's assistant director-general for health
security, David Heymann, said he was puzzled by the claims.

"I don't understand why they would take this virus to make a
biological weapon. It doesn't transmit from human to human.

"Indonesia needs to spend more time on dealing with infections
with chickens, and stopping humans being infected. They need to
be sharing the viruses with the world community so we can do the
proper risk analysis to help attack the problem."

Dr Supari had "opened a very important issue" of improving
access to vaccines, Dr Heymann said. "The problem we've had is
interpreting how to move this message forward.

"She could be a part of the solution, instead she is only
highlighting the problem."

He said he had discussed the book with Dr Supari. "She told me
(Dr Yudhoyono) had made her take it off the market," he said.

The director of the WHO's Collaborating Centre for Influenza, in
Melbourne, Anne Kelso, said she was saddened by Dr Supari's
accusations.

"We feel we are working for global public benefit by monitoring
how this virus is changing as it moves around the world,"
Professor Kelso said. "We don't personally profit in any way
from that work."

20 Flights Delayed Due to Floodwaters at Ahmad Yani, Semarang, Airport, need real Investor at Airport Infrastructure

At least 20 Airlines from Jakarta to Semarang were delayed due to floodwaters that hit Ahmad Yani airport in Semarang on 12th Tuesday 2008.

"Around 20 Airlines from Jakarta to Semarang must be postponed as floods forced authorities to close the Ahmad Yani airport temporarily," the Soekarno-Hatta airport official Herry Bekti said.

It was impossible for airplanes to take off because water as high as 20 centimeters was across the airport's runways, he said.

By 1:30 p.m. all flights schedules from Jakarta to Semarang had returned to normal.

Soekarno Hatta and Ahmad Yani Airport, are easy to floodwaters at Semarang because Rob and Soekarno Hatta by big Rain.

So Indonesia Country need more and more airport at Jawa Island Or Sulawesi Or Kalimantan Or Sumatera or Irian Jaya Island, Are You are Investor ?

Cost of living at Abu Dhabi ?

Is the salary of 16000 dhs per month good enough at Abu Dhabi ?

16k pm is not bad BUT keep in mind the following cost of living
Accommodation not furnished 60k -75k PA
Schooling +/- Dhs 750pm per child
Transport car are cheap but driving license can take ages. till then its the taxis forget the public transport it does not exist.

Keep in mind also that the 2nd furniture has practically no resale value.

1) Job security & flexibility note check the local laws on changing jobs. most cases the company will prefer that you go back to your county rather than go to an other co,
2) There is almost no chance of immigration or getting a passport of uae. as compared to other western countries...

43 Flights delayed at Soekarno Hatta Airport, Jakarta

Forty-three flights from Jakarta`s Soekarno-Hatta Airport to various destinations were delayed on Friday due to bad weather.


Continuous heavy rain which started on Friday morning forced the airport to temporarily close two of its runways, Haryanto, head of the branch office of PT Angkasa Pura II which operates the airport, said.


He said 12 flights from various cities were diverted to other airports.

Visibility was down to 300 meters, making it impossible for planes to land, he said.

Tol ke Bandara Soekarno Hatta terpaksa ditutup, banjir

Jalan Tol Sedyatmo yang menuju dan dari Bandara Soekarno Hatta terpaksa ditutup sejak Jumat pukul 14.00 WIB akibat banjir setinggi 75 centimeter dan meluapnya Sungai Tanjung yang lokasinya bersebelahan.

"Kami terpaksa melakukan penutupan karena kendaraan sudah tidak bisa melewati genangan banjir," kata Kepala Cabang Cililitan -Tomang - Cengkareng PT Jasa Marga Tbk, David Wijayatno, di Jakarta.

Genangan setinggi 75 centimeter tersebut berlokasi di kilometer 26 sampai dengan 27 (sekitar 1 kilometer) karena pompa air milik Pemprov DKI Jakarta yang bertugas memompa Kali Tanjung ke laut tidak berfungsi), kata David.

Kondisi ini, kata David, membuat Kali Tanjung meluap serta masuk ke dalam saluran (storage) jalan tol karena tidak kuat menampung volume air yang cukup besar sehingga tanggul penahannya jebol sehingga masuk ke jalan tol.

Saat ini, kata David, lalulintas yang terjebak di Kamal akan diputar balik untuk menuju bandara, begitu juga yang dari arah bandara diputar balik melalui jalur alternatif di belakang. Namun David tidak mengetahui persis saat ini jalan alternatif Dan Mogot apakah tergenang atau tidak.

Menurut David saat ini pihaknya tengah menunggu perbaikan pompa air di Kali Tanjung, apabila nantinya sudah dilaksanakan pihaknya akan memompa genangan yang ada di jalan tol untuk dibuang ke saluran (storage) yang dimiliki.

David mengakui telah terjadi antrean yang sangat panjang di tol, baik menuju bandara maupun dari arah bendara. Akan tetapi saat ini pada pukul 16.00 WIB kendaraan satu persatu diarahkan untuk balik arah.

Hujan deras masih terjadi di sejumlah wilayah di Jakarta dan sekitarnya pada pukul 16.00 WIB kondisi ini juga yang membuat Kali Tanjung meluap serta ditambah lagi dengan tidak berfungsinya pompa air.

Sampai berita diturunkan, David belum berani mengungkapkan sampai kapan jalan tol akan ditutup. Akan tetapi yang jelas apabila Sungai Tanjung mulai surut pihaknya baru akan memompa genangan air yang ada untuk dibuang ke saluran.

Sebelumnya banjir juga kerap melanda tol Sedyatmo yang ketika itu terpaksa ditutup akibat meluapnya Sungai Tanjung, hanya saja saat itu disebabkan pasang naik laut di kawasan tersebut.

Kemacetan total terjadi di jalan tol Sedyatmo sejak dari pintu tol ke arah bandara.

Taksi-taksi yang membawa penumpang ke bandara tampak menurunkan penumpang di pintu masuk tol tersebut karena tidak mungkin melanjutkan perjalanan.

Bus-bus Damri pun tidak dapat bergerak. Seorang penumpang bus Damri yang naik dari Gambir mengatakan bahwa ia sudah tiga jam di dalam bus, namun belum juga bisa sampai ke bandara.(*)

Bandara Soekarno Hatta Banjir, Airlines banyak yg tidak tanggung jawab

Akibat Jakarta banjir, 1 Februari 2008, kabarnya, calon penumpang di bandara Sukarno-Hatta, menderita, menahan emosi, kelelahan, lapar dan sakit (hati), karena pelayanan jasa penebangan sangat buruk!!. mereka tdk dapat makanan, harus cari sendiri, dan konon hanya dapat camilan karena makanan sudah habis. Daan tidak ada penjelasan jadual penerbangan dari pengelola bandara Sukarno-Hatta yang (mungkin) tidak berperasaan.

Yang lebih hebat, menurut beritanya, Lion Air berangkat meninggalkan penumpangnya tanpa peduli, padahal sudah jelas mereka terlambat, pasti karena macet. Masa pihak Lion Air tidak tahu situasi, soalnya jumlahnya tidak tanggungtanggung, 51 (limapuluh satu orang) mahasiswi kebidanan Gorontalo. Mereka telat 5 (lima) menit, setelah berjuang 8 (delapan) jam perjalanan, dari Slipi ke Bandara. Saat itu mereka sangat terlantar.

Lain lagi Adam Air, calon penumpang tiba di depan counter check-in pkl. 7.15 pagi, dinyatakan terlambat untuk keberangkatan pkl 8.30, tiketnya pun hangus alias harus bayar lagi untuk tiket baru. Mereka akan dilaporkan ke Menteri Perhubungan oleh salah seorang pejabat Bandara, “kalau itu betul” katanya.

Pihak Jasa Marga dan Pemda DKI, seharusnya menyediakan angkutan paling tidak dapat membantu calon penumpang ke Bandara. dalam hal ini pun, kelihatannya Jasa Marga dan Pemda DKI juga (mungkin) tidak perduli.

Pelatihan Airlines di Tadika Puri

Lembaga Pendidikan Airlines Business Career Tadika Puri Makassar membuka pendaftaran peserta baru untuk pelatihan ground handling penerbangan. Untuk pelatihan gelombang pertama pendaftaran short course berlangsung Januari-Februari 2008.
Short course selama empat bulan meliputi pelayanan jasa di industri penerbangan seperti reservasi, ticketing, hingga crew airlines. "Seluruh pembelajaran meliputi reservasi hingga ticketing harus diselesaikan sebelum dinyatakan lulus," kata Direktur Airlines Business Career Tadika Puri Makassar, Heipi Mangiri.

Selain teori selama empat bulan, peserta pelatihan ground handling akan mengikuti praktek magang di perusahaan travel (satu bulan) dan bandara sekitar tiga bulan. "Saat ini sudah banyak lulusan kami yang terserap diberbagai airlines hingga travel. Minat masyarakat begitu besar karena pendidikan ini merupakan yang pertama di kota ini," tambah Heipi.

Garuda Operasikan Pesawat Boeing 777-200 ER

PT Garuda Indonesia beberapa tahun lagi bakal mengoperasikan pesawat Boeing 777-200 ER. Pesawat ini dalam waktu dekat akan dipesan dari pabriknya.

Direktur Operasi Garuda Ari Sapari mengatakan, pihak Garuda akan melakukan Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) dengan perusahaan Boeing dalam ajang Singapura Air Show yang rencananya digelar pada 18 Februari hingga 22 Februari 2008 mendatang.

"Kita akan meng-announce (mengumumkan) secara resmi di sana," kata Ari usai diskusi mengenai gangguan banjir Bandara Soekarno Hatta.

Targetnya, kata Ari, pesawat ini akan sampai ke Indonesia dan dioperasikan pada tahun 2010. Ditambahkan Ari, pemesanan pesawat ini dilakukan untuk menjawab permintaan akan pelayanan penerbangan Garuda yang terus bertambah.

Pesawat berbadan lebar ini diplot untuk memberikan pelayanan rute-rute luar negeri yang jarak terbangnya cukup jauh seperti Eropa, Timur Tengah dan Asia Timur.

Akan tetapi Ari tidak mau menyebutkan berapa nilai investasi pengadaan pesawat ini. Yang jelas, kata Ari, pengadaan Boeing 737-200 ER ini dilakukan dengan pola sewa beli. Pesawat disewa dulu dan dalam jangka waktu yang telah ditentukan akan menjadi milik Garuda.

Malaysia Airlines Business

Sepang: Malaysia Airlines today announced its 5-year Business Transformation Plan (BTP 2) with bold profit targets of up to RM2-3 billion per annum by 2012.

Building upon its successful Business Turnaround Plan (BTP 1) which saw the national carrier completing its turnaround a year earlier than scheduled, Malaysia Airlines aspires to achieve the profit targets by transforming into the World’s Five Star Value Carrier (FSVC), offering 5-Star products and services at affordable prices.

Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala said, “Based on a series of focused key business activities, we aspire to achieve RM400-RM500 million (on target), RM551-RM650 million (exceeding) and RM651-1000+ million (outstanding) in 2008.

“We believe that if we aim for the best and stretch our limits, we will achieve an annual profit of RM1.5 billion by 2012 even after factoring the industry’s challenges. Should the magnitude of overcapacity and liberalisation be less than what we anticipate, we can achieve between RM2 – RM3 billon per annum.

“We will review and update our targets on an annual basis. Over the past 2 years, we have managed to outperform our BTP 1 targets, and we have every intention to continue to exceed the targets set in our scorecard.”

The airline is confident, he also said, because the BTP 2 is developed based on ‘aiming and planning for the best, assuming the worst.’

Jala added, “On ‘aiming and planning for the best’, I keep pushing the team to go for the impossible targets e.g. record profit and grow in a profitable manner.

“On ‘assuming for the worst’, I told employees that we must transform to become a Five Star Value Carrier. We have to build a ship that can weather the storm, in our case, the imminent liberalisation and overcapacity in the market. Based on industry estimates, about 400 aircraft have been deployed into the Asia Pacific, South Asia and Middle East markets last year with another 400 expected this year. This situation of overcapacity, the proliferation of LCCs and the liberalisation of ASEAN skies, will lead to erosion on prices and margins. To remain a key player, we need to become more competitive. Hence, the idea of FSVC.”

American reacts to pilot retirements

A recent rash of early pilot retirements at American Airlines has prompted the U.S. air carrier to cancel several flights and use management pilots.


The top airline in the United States lost 143 pilots to retirement this week and the mass exodus left American struggling to meet its demands nationwide, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

Friday's mass retirement marked nearly half the number of American Airlines pilots who retire in the average year.

The sudden loss of so many pilots has already led the airline to cancel 28 February flights, including lucrative overseas routes to locations such as Beijing and London.

Aviation consultant Robert Mann told the Tribune such actions were typical for a business struggling with a sudden change in its everyday operations.

"All the slack gets cut out of the system in a restructuring, so there's very limited ability to respond to anomalies," the R.W. Mann & Co. president said.
